Complex Sentences

Complex sentences involve a specific sentence structure combining an independent clause, a dependent clause, and a subordinating conjunction. Complex sentences add variety and depth to writing. Students must have a firm grasp of the concept of the complete sentence, including subject and predicate, before moving on to analyze other sentence structures. |

- Complete grammar sheets “Identifying Clauses,” “Creating Complex Sentences,” “Identifying Sentence Structures,” and “More Identifying Sentence Structures".
- Extra Engagement: For advanced students, print and cut out the self-checking “Analyzing Sentence Structures Task Cards” to be used as an independent literacy center or along with a board and die for a cooperative game.
- Bring the concept of the complex sentence into everyday reading by inviting students to browse through real literature and texts to identify complex sentences within stories and books.
- Invite students to examine their own writing for evidence of complex sentences.
