Making inferences is an abstract concept that all students need to master to become successful in understanding what they read. The GrammarSong video “Making Inferences” explains how people make inferences every day when speaking and communicating with one another. Verse two brings the concept into reading, emphasizing that readers must use prior knowledge and text evidence to “read between the lines” to make an inference. The activities below provide a valuable framework for modeling the making of inferences and the citing of text evidence to support inferences being made. Introductory and independent practice lessons are all included. |
- Use grammar activity “Making Inferences Intro” on the smart board or interactive whiteboard to model how to make and support inferences (by showing text evidence) when reading.
Fourth Grade
- Complete grammar sheet “Making Inferences” independently or with partners to connect the fact that we make inferences in our real life communication each day without even knowing it!
- Use grammar activity “Making Inferences Intro” on the smart board or interactive whiteboard to model how to make and support inferences (by showing text evidence) when reading.
- Complete grammar sheets “More Inferences” and “Supporting Inferences” to practice reading independently or with a partner to make and support inferences using text evidence.
- Invite students who need to be challenged to write a paragraph on a topic of his/her choice. Ask him/her to create questions for others in which making inferences would be required.
Fifth Grade
- If necessary, complete grammar sheet “Making Inferences” independently or with partners to connect the fact that we make inferences in our real life communication each day without even knowing it!
- Use grammar activity “Making Inferences Intro” on the smart board or interactive whiteboard to model how to make and support inferences (by showing text evidence) when reading.
- Additionally, use grammar sheets “More Inferences” and “Supporting Inferences” as a review to practice citing text evidence to support inferences made.
- Complete grammar activities “Inference Work” and “Inference Practice and Challenge” to build independent skills in reading and interpreting text while citing evidence to support inferences made.
