Proverbs and adages are handed down over generations as a means of giving advice.  Often proverbs and adages contain figurative elements that can make comprehending their meanings difficult.  The GrammarSong video “Proverbs and Adages” contains multiple examples of common proverbs and adages.  The GrammarSong matching activity makes interpreting proverbs and adages fun and hands-on. 

Review Video & Follow These Instructional Guidelines

Fourth Grade

  • Notice proverbs and adages in everyday oral conversation.  Proceed to fifth-grade recommendations if needed.

Fifth Grade

  • Print and cut apart “Proverbs and Adages Matching Game Cards.”  Use the cards as a memory flip game or within a cooperative learning structure.

Easy Writing Center:  Print out and cut apart the “Proverbs and Adages Matching Cards.”  Allow students to choose a proverb or adage to illustrate and define to create a class book.
