Puns are created when a word or group of words within a single sentence can have multiple implied meanings. The GrammarSong video “Pardon the Pun” gives specific examples of puns. Although puns are a fun concept to learn, the abstract nature of the pun can be difficult for younger students or for English Language Learners. Before understanding puns, students must have a clear concept of homophone and homograph usage, as well as, a firm grasp of figurative language. Often times, puns are also examples of idioms or hyperboles.
